| TTyler's Gilmore Brothers Sound And Lighting Has Something For Everyone By CHAD THOMAS Staff Writer You might not need a large-scale laser light show to suddenly break out during the middle of your wedding reception or retirement party, but Alan Gilmore wants you to know it's not out of the realm of possibility. The owner and namesake of Gilmore Brothers Sound and Lighting can provide a simple sound system with music for an elegant soiree, or he can set up an LED-lighted dance floor that will transform your company party into a Saturday Night Fever dance-a-thon. with enough notice, we can do anything (our customers) want," said Gilmore, a 46-year-old native Tylerite with 30 years experience in the sound and lighting industry. Gilmore grew up in Tyler and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and Tyler Junior College. It was here that he got his start in the industry as a teenager, running sound for the local bands, Illusion and Hobbit. Since then, he's worked as a freelance sound technician in Dallas, Houston and Austin before returning to his hometown almost two years ago, after Hurricane Ike destroyed his home in Galveston. Shortly after coming back to Tyler, Gilmore started his company with his brother, Greg, in the fall of 2008. Since then, Gilmore Brothers has provided DJ services, custom lighting and live music setups for weddings, parties and large social gatherings across Texas and the country. While Gilmore isn't exactly a one-man band, he runs his business with a hands-on mentality, overseeing equipment setup and the operation of his light and sound systems. He also works as a technician for Tyler's Sierra Sound Rental, a company specializing in equipment rentals and sound mixing services for large, live stage performances. Gilmore dabbles in music production and promotions and once worked as a promotions representative for a Colorado-based company that touted major rock acts including Nine Inch Nails, Gwar and Dread Zepplin, among others. These days, when he's not busy with a scheduled engagement or running sound at a local live music venue, he's "drumming up the streets for work" which has been his mantra since launching his company two years ago. "We just beat the streets and did a lot of face contact, and I used Facebook and social networking to get the word out," he said. Gilmore also designed his company's website, which is about to undergo a major "professional" overhaul, he said. As it is, the website vaults to, or near, the top of the Google search results for "sound and light" in Tyler, Shreveport and Dallas, a tool that has given his business major online exposure. Thanks to his industry contacts in Tyler and across the state, Gilmore said his sound and light capabilities "are pretty much unlimited." He customizes his setups for the event and customer needs. "It depends on what they want to do," he said. "If they want someone to do sound for them for a small event, we can do that. Or if they want to go into the Oil Palace and go full production, we can do that too." Recently, Gilmore Brothers has handled light and sound for Texas College's 2010 Legacy Awards, the Mayor's Prayer Breakfast in Tyler, the Natural Wellness Expo and other citywide events in Lindale and Hideaway Lake. But Gilmore Brothers also works smaller backyard get-togethers and delivers a DJ rental package that offers song list of more than 25,000 tunes. |
